Project started!

First up, I got a wild hair and started work on a Tusken Raider mask mold. I bought a mask from Studio Creations a while back, but I’ve always wanted to make a mold for it. The mask from SC is good to have because it gives me something to start with. I’m doing my mold from scratch though, using wood. It just happens that 2″ lumber (really 1 1/2″ when planed and sold) stacked 4 high, is the same height as the mask. I’ve got a start on it, and I think it will work. I’ll layer it up, and then fill in the rest of details with Bondo so I can get the right shapes. Check out the progress pictures… The pieces are cut out on the band saw to start, and then shaped more on the belt sander.

The “eye” and “snout” layers

Everything stacked up

And some side by side pics..

My next steps are to add some more detail to the “eye” layer, and drill out the center of the “snout” and start gluing it together, then I’ll fill in some areas with wood blocks to give it some shape, and then slather some Bondo on it to fill in all the cracks, and to give it some final shaping. Then a bit of sanding, and voila!

Tusken mask update

I made some more progress on the tusken raider mask today.

I added the “tusks” on the side of the mask, and drilled the center of the snout out.

I used a 1″ fornster bit to drill out the inside of the snout area. When I form it, it should suck down in a cone shape, at least I hope it will. Not sure, I might need to add some air holes down through all three layers in that area to make sure it gets some suction.

I’m planning on using a new material to shape the rest of the mold, once I fill in that huge under cut underneath the chin area.

I’ve read good things about it, and I’ve been wanting to try it out. I think it will do the trick with the Tusken mask. At least I hope so.
