This page is no longer updated.

I have lots of good information here, but there are broken links, and missing images and I’m probably not going to bother updating the code. I’m keeping the page around for posterity really.

News:

Articles

Here is a collection of Beer and Brewing related articles. Some of which I have written, some are collected from other place, or are posted for a freind. As you can see, my interests tend towards the Medieval and related areas of interest. This should come as no surprise, what with my SCA involvemnet.

  • Modifying a Marga Mill – A collection of information I used to modify an in-expensive italian grain crushing mill to a grain mill for homebrewing.
  • A 1503 English Ale – An A&S article on a recipe from 1503, and my methods, theories, and all that on how I reproduced this Beer. Also I used the second runnings from this to make the “Mr. Webbs Small Bragot” that follows this.
  • Mr. Webbs Small Bragot – This is an A&S article for a 1669 bragot based on a recipe in book of “The Closet of the eminently Learned Sir Kenhelm Digbie, Kt. Opened” which is a great resource.
  • On making a 1615 Hippocras – An A&S article on a simple and pleasing sweetend spiced wine based on a recipe from the year 1615. This one was Very Popular at the Madrone A&S Competition that I entered it in.
  • Honey Chamomile Amber Ale, and its inspiration in period. – This article was one of those “Make it, then try to explain it” type of articles. It produced a nice and tasty beverage.
  • Words Ending In -ator – This is a collection based on a list compiled by Herb Bresler, a denzien of the Home Brew Digest list that I read every day. See Bottom of page for a link to the list.

Current Recipes: brewed in the last couple of years.

Starlight Stout – Sweet Stout – This is one of my House Ales, its very well liked. Its a sweet stout, not by adding lactose, but using Crystal Malt, and Honey to add the residual sweetness this style requires.

Dragonfly Amber Wheat – Fruit Wheat Ale. – This is my basic Fruit Wheat beer. I can add different flavors as needed, as is my most popular Wedding Ale.

Jealous Monkey – Alt-Style Ale – This ale has an amusing history, regarding the monkey in the title, ask me sometime. :) Its a semi attempt at a german altbier, but with my own twists.

Eyebright Amber Ale – Honey Chamomile Amber Ale. – This is the refinement of the Honey Chamomile Amber Ale, converted to all grain, with some subtle flavor changes.

Old Recipes: From the first beer thru my Gothic Phase.

First Taste – Raspberry Amber Ale – My first (and second) ever brew. Tasted pretty good, back when I was searching for a cool name. First time I boiled it over, and chased all of my roommates out of the house.

A Taste of Darkness – Dark Spiced Honey Stout – My third beer, a Christmas beer, packaged and labeled as gifts. Gots lots of praise, no boil over, happy roommates. :) Gave up on the name.

Pale Moonlight – Pale Ale – First brew in the home in Seattle, WA. Kicked around the brewery name, Gothic Badger Brewery. Beer was ok. Tried another version of it later, and added Lemon Peel to the fermentor. Really helped it.

Rising Dawn – Apricot Wheat Ale – Still using the Gothic Name. It fit with my life at the time, and gave me a scheme for naming my brews. The beer was great, it was attempt to clone Pyramid Apricot Amber Ale. This recipe was the basis for my Dragonfly Amber Wheat.

Black Dragon Stout – Espresso Stout – A delightful combination of Coffee, and Beer. What more could you ask for. This was a request recipe from my roommate, Erin Lynn. Damn tasty. Still using the the Gothic Badger name.

Midnight Summer’s Ale – Blackberry Wheat – An attempt to make a nice light ale for my Ex-wife. It didn’t turn out like I’d hoped. (either of them) but the Beer was good.

Dark Harvest – Cinnamon Apple Nutmeg Ale – The Result of a gift of a half of a box of apples from my mother. Darn tasty, very seasonal. Last beer to be made under the Gothic Badger label.

Honey Chamomile Amber Ale – Trying to replicate a beer I tasted at Bison Brewery in Berekely, CA many years ago. Still trying, but it was a nice beer none the less. This is version 1.0.

Misc. Links and Info

Home Brew Digest – This is the HBD, a wonderful mailing list that mails 1 big message each day, containing many message from HBD members. This place is the absolute best place to interact with some of the best and brightest in the homebrewing community. Its freindly, informitive, and very very useful. The website has all of the past HBD’s archived, and searchable. Its a great place to get information. To SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE send an e-mail message with the word “subscribe” or “unsubscribe” to request@hbd.org.

Brewery – The Brewery is another great place to get information. The Brewery is Home of the Cat Meow 3 recipie data base with over 2000 recipes. It also has a huge library of articles on most any subject of homebrewing, from beginning to advanced. One of the best sites out there for brewing. Also, they have started up a new section with a place to submit recipes, that is to replace the Cats Meow. Its database is growing daily. There are many other features, including Software reviews, Clip art, clubs, and a recipe calculator. Check It Out!

Promash Brewing Software – One of the best pieces of brewing software I have been able to find. Its got almost every tool needed to brew, and then some. A nice and complete listing of ingredients to choose from, and very easy to use. AND its cheaper than most I have found. Download the Free Demo, and try it yourself. (fully functional, can only save 3 recipes) One nice thing is that the author is very open to feedback, and will fix problems quite fast, when the do appear. I heartily recomend this one as a satisfied customer.
